We’ve had a lot of success with our two-stream (green/blue) system. In fact, over 800,000 tonnes of material have been diverted from our landfill since 1996. But then we hit 100% processing capacity, and we still wanted apartments and businesses to participate in the system. 

To do that using only blue and green bags we would have needed to do a multi-million-dollar expansion of our facilities or reduce the residential waste we were processing. Instead, the change to a three-stream system means that we can better manage which waste we’re processing, and recycle and compost more, all from our existing facility with reduced contamination.
